“Going Dutch” is an expression we, Belgians, tend to love and smile at. I suggest you find out what it is all about as I am sure it will make you laugh too.
The Belgian smile usually disappears when a caravan accompanies the expression; this means tourists will enter the country but might not spend a dime as they are traveling with their Mobile Homes, containing everything needed on vacation.
You can imagine my happiness when I witnessed this scene in The Netherlands. I realized that caravans are part of the Dutch landscape and identity.
The photograph underlines the splendor of a caravan parked next to the Dutch seashore, surrounded by a magnificent clouded sky and fishermen. I understood that there is a valid reason why people talk about cultural heritage, as it shines at its best when put into its original context.
