I shot this photograph at the Ritz during my one-month stay in the City of Lights and captioned it “Entre Chic et Choc”. Indeed, when I entered the hotel, the sight of this palazzo, which had just reopened its doors after four years of renovations, mesmerized and shocked me.
The hotel is a classical beauty but is full of (hidden) top-notch modernity, which makes it all the more interesting. I shot the picture on my way to the bathrooms – the best excuse/opportunity to discover a luxury hotel in Paris.
Although the staff is classy, smiling, and available, most luxury places do not want visitors to wander around the premises. They keep a (subtle) but close eye on guests who are not staying in their palace. This shot was taken quickly and discreetly. No members of the staff or guests noticed that this time my iPhone was keeping a close eye on them.
This scene summarizes what hôtelerie is about: organization, service, and discretion.
